Why diets don’t always work!
The word ‘diet’ has two common meanings in English. The first is the food you normally eat, but it also means a particular plan for eating, usually to lose (25) _________. Nearly every week it seems there is a new diet, with the second meaning, on the web. However, despite the millions of people who try diets each year, many of them fail to achieve their goals. There are several reasons why diets may not work.
Firstly, some diets tell people to avoid completely certain types of (26) _________, for example, carbohydrates, protein, or dairy products. This can be difficult to do over a long period and may lead to people wanting those types of things even more. These diets often result in people becoming (27) _________ and then feeling guilty if they have one portion of French fries or one chocolate bar.
Secondly, diets often focus on short-term goals rather than long-term lifestyle changes. People may lose weight quickly on a diet, but once they go back to their old eating (28) _________, the weight often comes back. This can lead to people losing and then gaining weight many times, which can damage health.
Thirdly, diets don’t always consider individual differences. Everyone’s body is different, and what works for one person may not work for another. People may also have different food needs based on their age, gender, and level of physical (29) _________.
Finally, in most cultures, eating is a social activity, and people may feel left out or judged if they can’t eat the same foods as their friends and family. This can make it hard to continue with a diet over time.

Read the blog. Choose the best word or phrase (A, B, C, or D) for each numbered space.
I’m often asked why there are nearly always problems between teenagers and their parents. They appear in families which have never had problems before. There are a number of reasons for this.
Firstly, teenagers need to become independent and start making their own decisions, even if some of them are bad. They don’t want to ask (25) ________ for every single thing which they want to do on their own.
Secondly, teenagers may not want to wear the clothes or have the hairstyle which their parents prefer. This is because (26) ________ is important to fit in with a group. Teenagers usually want to be part of the current trend, because they need to be accepted by their friends.
Problems may appear because parents may not like the way their children start to behave when they become teenagers. Previously, the child probably did everything he or she was asked immediately. Now, everything is questioned. Parents should change their (27) ________ as their children reach 13 or 14, giving them more independence, and continue to remove rules through their teenage years.
From the teenagers’ side, it is important for them to talk about things they are upset at – a decision, for example, setting a curfew time which they feel is too early. If a teenager starts to (28) ________ the rules of the parents, the relationship between the two sides will break down. It is better to talk about the issue and explain why it is difficult to follow a particular rule.

Tania | I’ve heard of something called FOMO, which stands for Fear of Missing Out. It’s the feeling that all your friends are doing much more interesting things than you at this very moment and that, if only you could meet up with them, you could have a great time. So I’m checking my media sites all the time to see what is happening. Well, no. I used to do that until I realized that it was taking over my life. So now, I limit myself to two hours a day – I’ve set a timer – but it’s SOOOOO hard!
Rita | I start at 7.00 when I wake up. I turn on my smartphone as I go into the bathroom to wash and clean my teeth, and I don’t turn off my smartphone until I’m about to go to sleep. It’s on silent at school – well, most of the time! – but I keep looking at the screen when the teacher can’t see me. I’ve heard about social media addiction, but that’s not a problem for me. I just prefer to talk to all my friends around the world rather than the one or two people I get on with in this boring place.
Eleanor | I suppose I use social media quite a lot, but I really prefer hanging out with people and talking to them face to face. Maybe I feel like this because my parents were quite strict with me about internet usage when I was younger. They put a screen time control on my phone, so I got used to only being on for a few hours a day. And that meant I never got a lot of people trying to contact me all the time. There’s no screen time control on my phone now, but we still have the rule that smartphones are not allowed in the dining room at home. |

V/ READING
Read the text and choose the best answer (A, B, C, or D) for each question.
Deforestation is the process of removing trees and other plants from an area of forest. This can occur for various reasons.
Agricultural expansion is one of the main causes of deforestation. As the demand for food increases, more land is cleared to make way for crops and animals raised for meat. In a similar way, a forest might be cut down to make way for more houses or for improvements in infrastructure, because the population in the area has risen quickly. An industry called logging is another common cause of deforestation, as trees are cut down for wood and other products. In addition to these human activities, deforestation can also occur due to natural causes, such as diseases which are spread by insects.
There is a dangerous circular process at work in some parts of the world. On the one hand, deforestation contributes to global warming, because trees take carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, out of the atmosphere during the day. Theirloss, therefore, leads to less CO2 being removed. Yet global warming is, itself, responsible for the loss of forests in some areas, because rising temperatures and changing weather patterns can increase the frequency of wildfires.
Deforestation can also lead to the loss of animals and plants. These animals and plants may be beautiful or interesting, but what we lose is much more important. According to the World Health Organization, of the 252 most important chemicals used in the treatment of illness, 11.1% come from plants and 8.7% from animals. If we lose plants and animals from the Earth, we may lose more chemicals which can fight disease.

Don | I traveled to Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, from New York, and with several stops along the way, it took more than one day. But it was worth it when I got there. Everyone was really friendly at the airport, in my hotel, and at all the tourist places I visited, like the old town, with its wonderful architecture, museums, and street markets. I loved all the food, especially the national dish, nasi goring, which is fried rice mixed with vegetables, meat, and spices, with a fried egg on top.
Andy | I had a great time in Singapore – once they let me out of the airport! The guy never told me what was wrong with my electronic travel document, but I waited 30 minutes until he said OK. After that, everything was lovely. I visited the Gardens by the Bay most days and saw the Merlion statue, with the head of a lion and the body of a fish. My special meal was chili crab, which is just that – crab in a spicy chili sauce.
Kasun | I won a scholarship which allowed me to spend a year in one of the ASEAN countries. I chose Malaysia, because I already knew the country from two visits with my parents as a child, and it’s not too far from Sri Lanka, where I live. Also, I know some of the cooking of the country, because I had a Malaysian friend at school. He cooked me nasi lemak once, and it was my special meal while I was in Kuala Lumpur – rice cooked in coconut milk and served with a spicy sauce, peanuts, and a little salty fish. |
